Itīs not like I discovered gun powder here, but this will come in handy sometimes.

When you are making a SFF with independent colors for each groups (I.E.:charater colors are 1 to 15, hadouken colors are 16-23, etc. each group palette differs from other like these shots:
Charīs sprites

And the final result should be this:

The tedious part comes when you are copying th colors from the 2nd pal to the first to make the complete palette...

Since there are no apps that allow to copy a group of colors and insert them in other pal or move the group inside the pal (at least Photoshop canīt do it) you can perform it using an HexEditor. Even with the crappy MS-Dos editor you can do it, but is dangerous because special characters like 0x00 are not presented correctly and you can miss some colors because of that.

There is an easier way to do that: just edit the second .pal with a text editor (Windows notepad for example).
You should see something like this:

CODE

JASC-PAL
0100
256
0 0 0
0 0 0
0 0 0
0 0 0
0 221 255
33 33 33
115 132 247
132 82 33
132 132 165
etc.


Just copy the lines after the zeros, and paste them into your 1st .PAL. wink.gif

MMh. but Iīm working with ACTs here, as you can see. But maybe I can just download PSP and try it.

Yes, but before making the palettes in .ACT, they were in .PAL form, right?

And you don't have to download PSP: every .PAL have the same format (the only thing that changes is the 1st line of the file, in that case JASC-PAL).

Nope, if you are working with Photoshop only. Photoshop uses ACT files, and those can't be modified as easy as PAL files.

Oh, OK. I wasn't aware of that.
I'm taking a wild guess here, but perhaps Photoshop can convert between .ACT and .PAL?

Otherwise I think using "insert the name of a tool like paletero here", to convert your .ACT to .PAL files, then modyfing the .PAL with a text editor, and then finally re-using "insert the name of a tool like paletero here" to make the .PAL a .ACT file again would be much simpler than hex editing...
(note the fact that I'm good with an hex editor, but better with a text editor ;D)

An usefull tool to convert PAL to ACT, and to manage palletes in easier way is PALETERO. You can get it at http://bmt.mgbr.net under MISC section

or go with good ol' fashioned pal2act.exe by Elecbyte for the converting ;D

I haven't tried Paletero (at first glance, I thought people were talking about the guy that gives you popcicles, El Paletero.)
